Scoot Orders 9 Embraer E190-E2s

February 17, 2023

SINGAPORE, 17 FEB | Following discussions since late last year, Singapore Airlines (SIA)'s low-cost subsidiary, Scoot has announced it will add 9 Embraer E190-E2 jets to their fleet from 2024 onwards. On Friday Evening, the airline signed a Letter Of Intent (LOI) with lessor Azora for the jets, which will be delivered between 2024 and 2025.

The Embraer jet will be the smallest aircraft in the Singapore Airlines fleet- seating 112 passengers in a single-class configuration with a 2-2 layout. This new order of aircraft adds on to Scoot's diverse fleet of Airbus A320 family and Boeing 787 aircraft. The airline will be the second in Southeast Asia to operate the type, following Vietnam's Bamboo Airways.

According to the airline, the E190 will be used for "thinner routes to non-metro destinations out of Singapore". This suggests the airline could finally restart flights from Singapore to Koh Samui, which could not be operated any longer after retiring their fleet of Airbus A319 aircraft during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In December last year, the airline was in talks with Embraer for up to 50 E190-E2 jets. If the operation of these 9 additions go smoothly, the airline could seek a larger order of the type in the future. This will greatly expand the airline's network and allow it to efficiently fly to low-demand destinations in the Asian continent- to beat the likes of AirAsia.

Following this, Embraer jets will be a more frequent sight at the airport hub. Besides Scoot, Qantas will begin operations with their E190s from Darwin later this year.
