MYAirline Abruptly Ceases All Operations Indefinitely

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 OCT | The future of airlines are never certain. Today, Malaysia's newest airline- MYAirline, has rather abruptly ceased operations indefinitely due to financial issues.

The airline, which commenced operations on 1 December last year, had been rapidly expanding to domestic and regional destinations throughout the past year with their fleet of 9 Airbus A320-200 aircraft. The low-cost carrier aimed to challenge its dominant rival, AirAsia.

The airline was doing relatively well, and was somewhat popular in Malaysia, offering flights from their main hub in Kuala Lumpur. However, earlier this month, financial issues ensued with local media reporting that the airline had been delaying its payments to both airports and their staff. Furthermore, The airline's CEO, Rayner Teo stepped down leading to a chain of executive resignations at the airline on 9 October 2023.

Then, today, the airline announced the immediate suspension of operations due to "significant financial pressures", very abruptly. Just yesterday night, hours before the ceasure, the airline was seen promoting offers via their social media platforms, and also renewed their Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) earlier in the month.

The airline's final flight touched down in Kuala Lumpur at 4.31am on October 12th (Z98806 from BKI)- marking the end of the 10-month-old airline (for now).

The airline states that they are working tirelessly to resume operations as quickly as possible, and has tried to explore various partnership and capital raising options to prevent the suspension.
