It's Finally Happening: IndiGo Places First Widebody Order
April 25, 2024
BENGALURU, 25 APR | India's largest airline, IndiGo, has placed an order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with options for 70 more. This is the airline's first order for a widebody aircraft, as it has been operating a majority A320 family fleet since launch.
Despite this being their first widebody order, IndiGo is not a stranger to the larger jets as it currently operates a fleet of 2 Boeing 777-300ERs wet leased from Turkish Airlines (TC-LKD, TC-LKE). Nonetheless, this highly speculated order will open up greater prospects for IndiGo as it will be able to expand to further destinations in the US, Europe and Australia with the A350's increased range and capacity.
These new aircraft are set to be delivered from 2027 using Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. IndiGo will become the 5th low-cost carrier in the world to operate the type following Frenchbee, Air Caraibes, Evelop and World2Fly.
Will IndiGo be able to dominate the international aviation market, just like it did the Indian aviation industry?
