INDIA, 29 APR | Indian low-cost carrier, IndiGo is rumoured to be in talks with European aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, for a large order of Airbus A330neo aircaft, which is expected to be placed by the biennial Paris Air Show in June. The carrier currently boasts the largest domestic flight network in India, and now aims to expand further into Europe, offering affordable international travel.

According to sources such as Reuters, the airline was deciding between choosing Boeing 787s and Airbus A330neos, and reportedly has come to a decision- the A330, and there are various reasons why. Firstly, the Airbus A330neo is a fuel-efficient aircraft designed for such flights, with improved aerodynamics and new engines that reduce operating costs. It can carry up to 440 passengers and has a range of up to 7,200 nautical miles, making it a popular choice for airlines.

Furthermore, the type is way cheaper than its Airbus and Boeing counterparts, with sources suggesting that massive discounts are being given to IndiGo for the type, as there is a surplus of non taken up units (ntu) of the type in Airbus' factory as the aircraft's largest customer- AirAsia X underwent restructuring. As such, the airline will be able to get the new aircraft within just 6 months. Additionally, purchasing the Airbus A330neo is easier for pilot training due to fleet commonality. As India already has an Airbus A330 sim in Bangalore, it will help to ensure crew training as soon as possible.
