China Eastern A330 Suffers Uncontained Engine Failure

December 3, 2023

XIAMEN, 3 DEC | Today morning, a China Eastern Airlines Airbus A330-300 operating flight MU721 from Shanghai Hongqiao to Hong Kong suffered an uncontained engine failure in flight and made an emergency landing in Xiamen.

The aircraft operating the flight was B-8970, a 6.5 year old Airbus A330-300 delivered to the airline in June 2017. At approximately 9.40am local time, more than halfway through the flight, MU721 made a rapid descent and shortly after landed successfully in Xiamen. Images circulating online shows the cabin rattling following the uncontained engine failure. After landing, it was shown that fragments of the engine turbine had been ripped off.

It is currently unclear what caused the incident.
