Qantas Resumes Flights From Melbourne and Launches New Route To Delhi

Today, Qantas resumes flights from Melbourne after 20 months, due to COVID-19 restrictions. This also comes with an announcement of a new route to Delhi, India.

The first international flight departure from Melbourne, by Qantas, was QF35 to Singapore's Changi Airport. The flight was operated by VH-QPJ, a 16-year-old Airbus A330-300, delivered to Qantas in December 2005.

The first international flight arrival, on the other hand, will land later today. The flight is QF30 from Hong Kong and is operated by VH-QPD, a 17.9-year-old Airbus A330-300, delivered to Qantas in October 2004.

In other news, Qantas has also announced new routes from Melbourne to Delhi. This is because of the huge demand for flights from Australia to India and the huge success of the launch of flights from Sydney to Delhi. Flights from Melbourne to Delhi will operate 4 times a week, while flights from Delhi to Melbourne will operate non-stop. These flights to Delhi will commence from 22 December 2021. Qantas will also relaunch flights from Melbourne-London on 27 November 2021 and Melbourne-Los Angeles from 19 December 2021.

For a limited time, the menu onboard flights to Singapore and Delhi will also feature chicken satays and vegetable samosas to celebrate the resumption of flights.

"Victorians have done it tougher than most over the past two years and we think many will see the restart of Qantas international flights as another important step towards life getting back to normal,"Mr Joyce said.

"We are starting to see more and more Victorians booking a much-deserved international getaway, and as borders open up to international visitors we're expecting to see them visit Melbourne in large numbers, which will give local tourism and hospitality businesses a boost.

"The restart of our international flights is only possible because of the way Victorians and Australians more broadly have rolled up their sleeves to get the jab.

"While the past 20 months has undoubtedly been the most challenging in Qantas’ history, as we emerge from the crisis we are taking new opportunities to broaden our network in response to unprecedented pent-up travel demand. This is helping us bring more Qantas employees back to work.
